Yannis Tsarouchis (1910–1989) was a Greek painter known for his depictions of sailors, young men, and everyday life, blending Greek folk traditions with modernist influences. A key figure in 20th-century Greek art, his work was deeply inspired by Byzantine iconography, classical antiquity, and the Renaissance.
In the late 1980s, when Athens was a bidding city for the 1996 Summer Olympics, the legendary Minister of Culture Melina Merkouri asked Yannis Tsarouchis to design the logo for the candidacy. Without hesitation, Tsarouchis painted a branch of wild olive that used to crown the brow of Olympic champions in ancient times.
